Blue
Lake, California
June 21-26
In
an explosion of performances, lab presentations and forums, the
best of the breadth of ensemble practitioners from across the country
will gather amid the majestic Redwoods of Northern California's
Pacific Coast this summer. Join 14 companies, 80 artists, critics,
foundations, presenters and audiences from around the world for
this extraordinary event.
This
festival is a project of the Network
of Ensemble Theaters, a national association of over 40 ensemble
theater companies. The NET was created by and for artists to offer
support to those who have dedicated their life's work to creating
theater through the ensemble process. Ensemble theater today is
vast, diverse and a vital force in American theater. It is known
for its unique experimentation and artist-driven dynamic.
Fourteen
critically acclaimed ensembles from across the United State will
be participating in this festival. Full productions of new work
will be presented from:
- About
Productions (Los Angeles):
"By the Hand of the Father"
- Campo
Santo (San Francisco): "Fist
of Roses"
- Dell'Arte
Company
(Blue Lake, CA): "Golden State"
- Rude
Mechanicals (Austin, TX): "Cherrywood
[the modern comparable]"
- San
Francisco Mime Troupe (San Francisco):
world premiere!
- SITI
Company (New York): "Death
and the Ploughman"
- Universes
(Bronx, NY): "Slanguage"
From
SITI Company's hauntingly beautiful Death and the
Ploughman to the raw hip-hop energy of Universes'
Slanguage and a world premiere from the Tony award-winning
San Francisco Mime Troupe, this unique gathering promises
to encompass the truly energetic and distinct spirit of ensemble
theater. The festival will also feature Lab Presentations
by A Traveling Jewish Theater, Theatre Grottesco/Side Show Physical
Theater, NaCl, Cultural Odyssey, Playback Theater NYC, Sojourn
Theater, and Coatlicue Theater Company. The Lab Presentation
will explore the essential questions, process and experiments
that are at the heart of the work of these ensemble companies
and will include performance, demonstration and conversation.
Forums
involving leading practitioners in the field will also be held
on topics such as Training for Ensemble Based Work, Activism
and Ensembles, and Passing the Torch. Playback
Theater NYC will culminate the festival by "playing
it back" through their eyes and perspective in a unique
performance on the final day.

"We
are honored to be producing this first-ever national ensemble festival,"said
Michael Fields, Dell'Arte's Producing Artistic Director. "We
understand it is our mandate to create an event that truly provides
a context for understanding this vital force in American Theater
today. And we believe the ensemble companies and artists at the
center of this festival are exceptional not only in the quality
of their work, but also in the diversity of their ensemble processes
and cultural perspectives. This will truly be a one-of-a-kind event."
