Transportation
to Humboldt County (Arcata/Blue Lake)
|
| The
festival is located in Arcata and Blue Lake, which
are 300 miles north of San Francisco on the Redwood Coast and
80 mile south of the Oregon border. Arcata is a small college
town with good restaurants and accomodations (see previous page
for details). |
| Air
Travel |
|
The
Arcata/Eureka Airport (ACV) is small, and flights there can
be expensive (usually adding on $200-$300 to your ticket price,
although just recently Horizon Air added a direct flight from
Los Angeles for about $100 each way) It is serviced by two
airlines: United Express and Horizon, both operating either
small jets or propeller planes. Flights come in from San Francisco,
Portland, Seattle and now Los Angeles. Some flights may have
a short stop in Redding where you will stay on the plane.
The airport itself is actually located in McKinleyville
a town about 10 miles from Arcata. If you fly into the airport,
there is a shuttle service (1-888-338-5497) that can take
you where you need to go, for a small charge ($14 for HSU,
$17 for Hotel Arcata, $20 for Blue Lake).

Ground
Transportation
|
|
Arcata
and Blue Lake are located about 300 miles North of San Francisco.
By car, its about a five hour drive. By bus, about eight
hours (depending on time of day).

Driving
|
Driving
up to Humboldt is a pretty amazing experience. Its about
five hours from the San Francisco Airport, and costs between
$70 & $100 for a oneway rental. The rental agencies up here
are Enterprise, Alamo, and Hertz. There are a couple of routes
up: the coast (Route 1) which has breathtaking scenery but takes
about 3 hours longer, and straight up 101. DO NOT TAKE HIGHWAY
5. It may look like the shortest route, but is NOT (dont
believe Mapquest- its wrong). For rental car information,
look below.
If you are driving from Seattle the travel time is about 10-11
hours. If from Portland it will be about 8 hours travel time.
The best route is I-5 to Highway 199 to Highway 101. We can
assist with directions if needed. |
The
Greyhound
|
|
The
glamourous Greyhound bus line connects Arcata to the Bay Area.
Bus rides cost $30-$50 each way, making bussing the cheapest
alternative, but there are drawbacks. First of all, there
are only two buses that service Arcata, one that arrives in
the morning, and one that arrives at night, and its
at least an eight-hour ride up so scheduling and time become
an issue. Second of all, if youve never ridden the Greyhound
before, it can be a, well, colorful mix of characters. Nonetheless,
it is cheap.
