The
Play:
Slanguage is a full evening work of text and
movement where traditional theater synthesizes with poetry,
storytelling, rhythm, music, song and dance. In this work,
Universes searches and combs the gamut of language and culture.
Built loosely around the structure of a subway ride from Brooklyn
to the Bronx, the piece paints a rich portrait of the sights
and sounds of New York City in rap, gospel, riffs, bluesy
laments, and other poetic forms. Travel the subways where
beggars, battery sellers and preachers rile the trains
riders, and are transported above ground to an urban landscape
where Universes beats out the rhythm, to quote New York Times
critic Lawrence Van Gelder, "of the great Puerto Rican
migration, the politics of dislocation, the problems of assimilation,"
along with the high cost of poverty and the obstacles to living
your dreams.
The
Company:
Universes is an ensemble of multi-disciplined writers and
performers who fuse poetry, theater, jazz, hip-hop, politics,
down home blues and Spanish boleros to create moving, challenging
and entertaining theatrical works. The group breaks the bounds
of traditional theater to create their own brand of performance,
inviting old and new generations of theater-makers as well
as theater-goers and newcomers to reshape the face of American
theater.
The
Reviews:

of new art for a new generation."

will catch you by surprise, snap you to attention. Whether
you feel like a true urban American or an absolute alien to
this culture, Slanguage is a great experience."
Curtainup.com

insightful ... they have created something special, a work
of heart and soul that distills the essence of the city."
