About the Program
NET has seen ensembles and artists continue to adapt their practices amid safety concerns, financial uncertainty, and emotional loss due to the impact of the continuing pandemic. We have heard the desire to continue initiating relationships at a distance, while building toward future in-person work that is safe and supported. Given the continuing precautions around fully resuming travel and congregating indoors, and the valuable relationships our members created this past year through the 2020 NET/TEN Remote Connection Mini-Grants, we will offer Summer 2021 NET/TEN Virtual Exploration Grants of $500 and $1,000 (based on the applicant’s membership category) in June 2021 for NET member artists and ensembles to build relationships across distance by exploring remote opportunities for artistic and administrative connections, exchanges, peer learning, and research.
Through the Virtual Exploration Grants, NET hopes to support a breadth of our members in either deepening connections or developing new relationships. Through the Virtual Exploration Grants, NET aims to build off the intentions of the NET/TEN Travel & Exchange program by providing resources for members to connect with learning and relationships outside their own ensemble to inform their artistic practice. NET is intentionally pushing against the urgency and pull to return to “business as usual,” as our primary focus is on the health and wellbeing of our community; we support and are encouraging our members to root themselves in restorative practices of learning, inquiry, and reflection.
Much like in the earlier rounds of the NET/TEN Remote Connection Mini-Grants, the 2021 Virtual Exploration application will consist of a simple online form. Applicants will be asked to respond with short answers by written text or video. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis, and will be reviewed and awarded with weekly notification; grant payments will be issued by check within 30 days. The total pool of funds to be awarded is $100,000; we anticipate being able to award approximately 125 grants, depending on the distribution of individual/student ($500) and ensemble/affiliate ($1,000) applicants.
All current NET members are eligible to apply. As in the Fall 2020 NET/TEN Mini-Grant round, NET will explicitly center and lift up Black and Indigenous artists and ensembles in the NET membership and those who identify as People of Color, disabled artists, immigrant artists on O-work visas, LGBTQIA+ artists, parents and caregivers, and other folks living at the intersections of oppression by actively prioritizing funding for these requests. Our goal is to prioritize and center artists and ensembles who live and work at the intersection of identities that are marginalized by racist and oppressive systems.
Applications are now closed
Current NET members in good standing are eligible to apply, including those who received NET/TEN Remote Connection Mini-Grants or have other open NET/TEN grants. (If you have any questions regarding your membership status, please email [email protected])
Awarded applications will be funded at $1,000 for Ensemble and Affiliate Members, and at $500 for Individual and Student Members.
We will ask Black and Indigenous artists and others living at the intersections of oppression to self-identify in order to expedite those grants.
If you need help accessing the form for any reason, please contact the NET/TEN staff at n[email protected].
