Chinese Theatre Works

About Chinese Theatre Works

Chinese Theatre Works is a non-profit organization based in New York City. Our mission is to preserve and promote the traditional Chinese performing arts (including opera, shadow theatre, puppetry, dance and music); to create new works that bridge Eastern and Western aesthetics and forms; and to foster understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture in audiences, students, artists and educators around the globe.

Founded in 2001 by Kuang-Yu Fong and Stephen Kaplin, CTW presents over 50 performances from our repertoire of traditional and original works each year,  in addition to residencies, workshops and lecture/demonstrations on all aspects of Chinese theater and puppetry. We are also a resource for scholars and others interested in the traditional Chinese performing arts. We maintain  one of the largest private collections of Chinese shadow puppet figures in the US, the Pauline Benton and Jo Humphrey collection, which have appeared in major puppetry exhibitions internationally.
