About The New Stage Theatre Company

The New Stage Theatre Company (NSTC) is an award-winning theatre company founded in 2002 by Hungarian native Ildiko Nemeth. Drawing from Nemeth’s Eastern European theatre background and the multi-cultural influences of her collaborators, NSTC premieres foreign playwrights’ works in New York and creates original pieces. Under the artistic direction of Nemeth, New Stage has built a name for itself as a “daring experimental group” (Backstage) that uses a strong conceptual framework and vision to achieve a vital theatrical expression. The company’s works are distinguished by their bold visual style and juxtaposition of absurdist and physical humor with dark and difficult themes. Since 2008 New Stage has produced plays by invitation at legendary Off-Off-Broadway institutions including La MaMa, Theater for the New City and Dixon Place. In 2017 the company established its permanent artistic home, The New Stage Performance Space, at 36 West 106th Street in Manhattan, where it continues to present boundary-defying works and to support the creation of original, multidisciplinary productions that engage artists from theatre, dance, music, visual art and performance art. NSTC is a recipient of the prestigious Caffé Cino Fellowship, awarded to a company that consistently produces outstanding work, and the 2015 Outstanding Performance Art Production award. The company has received numerous nominations—including Outstanding Director, Outstanding Ensemble, and Innovative Stage Design—from the Innovative Theatre Awards, which in 2012 named NSTC's 10th anniversary a “story of the year,” commenting, “For a decade Ildiko Nemeth and [NSTC] have been bringing their unique brand of sophisticated, inspired and startling stage craft to NYC stages.” For more information, please visit our website at
