The Civilians

About The Civilians

Founded in 2001, the Civilians is a community of artists that has created 16 research-intensive theatrical projects on challenging contemporary issues. Often based verbatim on interviews, our work presents the voices of diverse “civilians,” individuals with firsthand experience of these pressing topics. The research and development process behind each work is creatively determined by the ensemble, driven by their questions and discoveries.

Notable projects include investigations into real estate development in Brooklyn (IN THE FOOTPRINT, 2010), the effects of climate change (GREAT IMMENSITY, 2013), women incarcerated in Colombia (ANOTHER WORD FOR BEAUTY, 2015), and contemporary experiences of death (THE UNDERTAKING, 2016).

Our work has been staged annually at leading venues in NYC, and in over 40 cities nationally and internationally. In 2014, we were the first theater company to be the resident artist at the Metropolitan Museum, and have received an Obie award and Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk nominations, among others.
