ARTFARM is an independent, non-profit organization, founded in 2001, dedicated to creating high quality theater with a commitment to simple living, environmental sustainability and social justice. Co-founders Marcella Trowbridge and Dic Wheeler have extensive history creating theater in the community and devising original work on both U.S. coasts, as well as abroad. ARTFARM has been dedicated to the development of performance work that engages the local community and sees theater as an opportunity for social commentary and reflection on the human condition. Professional performers are at the core of the ensemble, and ARTFARM additionally engages other professionals, interns and apprentices, as well as community volunteers. Dic’s background in Commedia dell’Arte and circus and Marcella’s classical dance and theater training combined with their agrarian and activist passions have created a unique stamp in their local community. ARTFARM presents a large scale outdoor summer production and additionally earns its income by touring shows to schools, colleges, festivals, etc., combined with teaching residencies and directing productions in local schools and art centers. It is ARTFARM’s intention to acquire a farm in central Connecticut, and renovate the barn, turning it into a performance, workshop and retreat space: ARTFARM – a theater, a working small organic farm, and a retreat and workshop center where artists, activists, under-served young people and just good folks can come for renewal and inspiration.
