Critical Mass Performance Group

About Critical Mass Performance Group

Founded in 1985 by Artistic Director, Nancy Keystone, Critical Mass Performance Group is a Los Angeles-based collaborative ensemble that makes category-busting new works and adaptations of classic texts, performed in traditional and alternative/site-specific spaces. A multi-year development process results in highly visual and physically expressive creations, extending the boundaries of traditional theatre forms. Known for exuberant theatricality, surprising collisions of ideas, and experimental forms, CMPG was named 2013's Best Theatre Company by the LA Weekly.

CMPG is recognized nationally as a leader in ensemble creation practices, and its productions have been consistently honored with nominations, awards and critical recognition.  Their production of APOLLO is prominently featured in Stephanie Arnold’s text book, THE CREATIVE SPIRIT (McGraw Hill, 2011).

The company develops a project for as long as it takes to bring to fruition.  Each piece is performed as work-in-process many times in different locations.  Venues and partners include: Center Theatre Group/Kirk Douglas Theatre, Getty Villa, The Getty Center, Skirball Cultural Center, LA Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), South Coast Rep's Studio SCR, Orchard Project, UCLA Hothouse, Network of Ensemble Theatre’s Micro-Fest, USC’s Visions and Voices at Bovard Auditorium,  Edgefest /L.A. History Project @ the Autry Museum, ASK Common Ground Festival, universities, community centers, and others.  The ensemble is comprised of a diverse group of performers, composer, and designers, from a wide variety of backgrounds.
