Dandelion Dancetheater

About Dandelion Dancetheater

Dandelion is situated at the crossroads of dance, theater, music, community activism, healing, and new performance forms. The company is committed to the individual and intersecting artistic visions of Kimiko Guthrie and Eric Kupers. Our work is built from a fascination with interdisciplinary experimentation, in-depth collaboration, vulnerability, risk-taking, and the truths that come from looking at the world from an “outsider” perspective.  We view the exploration of the endless possibilities of the human body as a potent means for personal and collective growth and share this exploration with diverse populations through performance, teaching, speaking, community events, video, and writing.

As an organization, Dandelion Dancetheater is a launching pad and creative home for several ongoing, in-depth projects.

Most projects involve multiple branches of Dandelion, and so stretch across categories. Still, we find the following breakdown (into four main categories) to be a useful  way of describing what we do:

I. Projects Directed by Eric Kupers

Bandelion is Eric’s Core Performance Research Ensemble.

The CSUEB Inclusive Interdisciplinary Ensemble – A joint project of Eric Kupers, long-term collaborators and the CSU East Bay Theatre and Dance Department, directed by Eric, that brings together students, alumni, community members and professional performers to create original works.

II. Projects Directed by Kimiko Guthrie

–Kimiko moves between creating group performance works, solo works and creative writing. She is currently on sabbatical from directing and choreographing with Dandelion in order to finish her first novel. Stay tuned for details.

III. Projects Co-Directed by Guthrie and Kupers

–Kimiko and Eric sometimes co-direct projects, both large and small.

–Currently Kimiko and Eric are serving as outside eyes and sounding boards for each other’s creative adventures.

IV. Classes and Workshops

–Dandelion Dancetheater leads classes and workshops for people of all ages, abilities, background and body identities.
