NET/TEN Shareback: Strange Attractor Theatre & Lightning Rod Special - A Field Guide for Young Ensembles

2014-15 Exchange Grant Recipients

Strange Attractor Theatre (Providence, RI) exchanged administrative practices through peer evaluation with Lightning Rod Special (Philadelphia, PA) by collaborating on a new play, Sans Everything. Using similar artistic backgrounds and divergent administrative experiences, they pushed each other in new organizational directions through the intimacy of a creation process.

SHAREBACK:

Strange Attractor and Lightning Rod Special spent four hours a week having what we called “NET Meetings” during our two 6-week rehearsal periods for Sans Everything. Every Sunday we would put aside the production and focus on some aspect of how we manage our companies -- budgets, taxes, work allocation, 5-year plans, producing calendars, decision-making -- from the specific to the general, we dug deep into each other’s inner workings. This field guide is an essentialized version of a few of the discoveries and exercises we found along the way. We hope they help other ensembles on the verge -- established or new -- jump start their communication around how they collaborate outside the studio.
