NET/TEN Shareback: Team Sunshine Performance Corp. - Exploring Cuban Artistic Practices

Spring 2017 Travel Grant Recipient

Team Sunshine Performance Corporation (Philadelphia, PA) hosted an artistic and cultural exchange between American and Cuban artists (Jorge Caballero Elizarde and Cheryl Zaldivar Jimenez) to lay the groundwork for the creation of a new devised work entitled ¡BIENVENIDOS BLANCOS! OR WELCOME WHITE PEOPLE! The piece examines the volatility of U.S.-Cuba relations in the context of Cuba’s history of white appeasement.

The artistic and cultural exchange included an introduction and examination of two aspects of Cuban performance. The first is a movement/dance practice rooted in the Yoruba-based religious practice commonly known as “Santeria”. This video provides a glimpse into this deeply Cuban performance form as practiced by our collaborators.

This video provides a look into the máscara (mask) technique for actor training and character creation practiced by our Cuban collaborators. Both Jorge and Cheryl have worked with Havana’s famed ensemble theatre company Teatro Buendía, where they first encountered and trained with these particular tools. Though not wholly unlike the way we approach character creation, their techniques and tools compliment our own, and our two approaches were employed in the making of BIENVENIDOS.
