NET/TEN Shareback: Hartbeat Ensemble - Postcards from India & International Travel Tips

2013 Spring Seed Grant Recipient

HartBeat Ensemble (Hartford, CT) traveled to Bangalore, India to meet with The Indian Ensemble. The ensembles explored a new way of working together on an intercultural project that investigates the cultural phenomenon of offshore outsourcing.

SHAREBACK:

India is huge and complex.  Working there with another theater company has been thrilling, rewarding and is only just beginning.  There is so much to distill from a 15 day visit to India I hope that the postcards, photos, interview and tips will help to frame some of the vast differences and similarities that I discovered. The India that I connected with inherently operates with an ensemble philosophy. It is my hope this shareback will help you to feel closer to our global theater family in a human to human way.

Steven Raider-Ginsburg
Co-Artistic Director, HartBeat Ensemble

TIPS FOR GETTING ABROAD FOR AN ARTISTIC VISIT

1. Start the visa process early!  Expect bureaucratic mistakes which could delay getting your visa by weeks.   If you are concerned about you doing it yourself there are a number of third party services that can do it for you.  The expense might be work the peace of mind.

2. Get in touch with the Embassy or Consulate of the country that you are visiting.  They will have a cultural person and just by reaching out and informing them that you are going they will appreciate it.  Possibly the American Embassy or Consulate in the country you are going to would also like to know about your collaboration.

3. Make sure you have all addresses and phone numbers for multiple contacts in the country you will visit.

4. Get vaccinations early, sometimes they require 8 weeks or more in advance of trip.  There are travel clinics or urgent care that might be less expensive than a doctor or hospital.
